Abstract:
To be an only child is a disease in itself. G. Stanley Hall was one of the first experts to give only children a bad reputation when he referred to their situation as a disease in itself. Even though the most finding was that only child are not very different from children with siblings, only child are commonly stereotyped as spoiled, selfish and bratty even today. This paper focuses on the idea on birth and parenting, and considers whether siblings and only child have a different idea or not, by using national representative data in Japan: National Family Research of Japan 2003 (NFRJ03). / As a result, siblings and only child did not have the difference. However, they are not the same at all either. In positive idea to birth and parenting, it is important not having the sibling or not, but whether people have the good relationship with siblings or not. In a word, if people do not have so much good relationship with their brother or sister, it means the similar situation to only child. Moreover, the idea changes by actually experiencing the marriage or having children. On the other hand, the experience of marriage or having children cause to the negative idea on birth and parenting. / For having the positive idea to birth and parenting, it is important the relationship in the family of orientation, so to say the environment of pre-parent.
