Structure of NFRJ98 Questionnaires

The NFRJ98 questionnaires include questions about the basic attributes of the respondent and of the household, about relationship with the relatives, and about various events experienced on lifecourse.

NFRJ98 surveyed Japanese people aged 28-77 in 1998. Questionnaires are splitted to two versions:

• the general questionnaire (19 pages) for respondents aged 28-57, and
• the special questionnaire (25 pages) for senior respondents (aged 48-77)

Pages 1-19 (Q1-Q31) are identical for both of the two versions. While the former version contains only these 19 pages, the latter have additional questions (Q32-Q37) on pages 20-25, which are on the experiences of nursing care. The canvasser selected the appropriate version of questionnaire through face-to-face confirmation of the respondent’s age.

NFRJ98 Questions

1. Respondent information (Q1-9)

Sex; birth year and month, age; place of birth; level of education, year graduated; level of education of father; occupation of father at age 15 of respondent (for those raised in foster care); when respondent left home, year and month; occupation (employment status, position, type of work, size of company, number of work days, number of work hours, commute time); first job (year month hired; position; type of work; size of company).

2. Household information (Q10-15)

Annual income of the respondent for the past year; number of people in the household; household structure; householder; type of domicile; annual household income for the past year

3. Spouses information and husband-wife relations (Q16)

Marital status; year/month married; same or different last name; birth year and month/age; level of education; occupation (employment status, position, type of work, size of company, number of work days, number of work hours, commute time); annual income for the previous year; status of health; spousal companionship (dinner, grocery and other shopping); division of responsibility for household chores (food preparation, laundry, bathroom cleaning, child rearing, caring for elderly family members); spousal support (consultation on worries and concerns; feedback regarding attitude and effort; encouragement and advice); power relationship between husband and wife; satisfaction with husband-wife relations (cooperation with chores, taking care of children, household finance management, sex life, married life overall, concept of family)

4. Respondent’s marital history (Q17-19)

Divorced/widowed (yes/no); year and month of first marriage; year and month of death (first marriage); employment behavior after marriage; employment behavior after pregnancy;

5. Respondent’s consciousness and quality of life (Q20-23)

Family norms (division of labor by gender, affection between couple, pre-marital sex, self-sacrificing parent, obligations of the eldest son, living with elderly parents); role strain (concerns about children, spouse, parents/in-laws, sense of alienation within the family, feeling of burden regarding ones role in the family, feeling of burden regarding ones work role, feeling of alienation at work, health status of respondent); stress measures (16 items)

6. Information about children and relationship with children (Q24)

Number of children; gender; birth month/year; living or dead; marriage of first child (specify child and when married); number of living children; relationship with children (regarding the first three children, living together/separately, location of domicile; same or different last name, frequency of communication, level of education, employment status, marital status, whether on good terms, concept of family); activities with children (dinner, hobbies/sports/games etc., going out, teaching knowledge and skills)

7. Parental information and relationship with the parents (Q25)

Year of birth/death of mother and father; relationship with parents (both mother and father, natural parents or foster parents, employment status, living together or separately, location of domicile; frequency of communication, whether on good terms, concept of family)

8. Sibling information and relationship with the siblings (Q26)

Number of siblings; relationship with siblings (first to third, gender, birth year, same last name, living together or separately, frequency of communication, marital status, concept of family)

9. Parents-in-law information and relationship with them (Q27)

Year of birth and death of mother- and father-in-law; relationship with parents (both mother- and father-in-law, employment status, living together or separately, location of domicile; frequency of communication, whether on good terms, concept of family)

10. Other relatives’ information and relationship with them (Q28-31)

Economic assistance given/received in the last year (children 18 years or older, father/mother, siblings, mother- and father-in-law); other assistance given/received in the last year (children 18 years or older, father/mother, siblings, mother- and father-in-law); trouble or fighting within the last year (spouse, children over 18, father/mother, siblings, father- and mother-in-law); source of assistance outside the family (for depression, confusion, sudden debts, illness, injury, bedridden/requires nursing); number of blood relatives and concept of family, grandmother, uncles, aunts, nephews/nieces, spouse of children, grandchildren, spouse of siblings, siblings of spouse); age of first grandchild
